California Insurance Code §758.5
Your right to choose, in plain English.
An insurance company cannot require your vehicle to be repaired at a specific shop.
They can recommend a shop, but only if you ask for a recommendation, and only after they've notified you in writing of your right to choose.
If you choose your own shop, the insurer must pay the reasonable cost to repair the vehicle in a workmanlike manner — they're prohibited from discounting that based on what their preferred shop would have charged.
If you accept their recommended shop, the insurer must stand behind those repairs if they aren't done properly.

Insurance FAQs
Common insurance questions.
Can my insurer require me to use their shop?
No. Under California Insurance Code §758.5 you have the right to choose any repair facility. Your insurer is required to pay the reasonable costs to repair your vehicle at the shop you choose.
What is a Direct Repair Provider (DRP)?
A DRP is a shop with a vetted working relationship with an insurance carrier. With a DRP, your repair can begin without waiting for an outside adjuster — which speeds the whole process up.
Will all of my repairs be covered?
Repairs directly related to the current accident are covered by your insurer. Pre-existing damage isn't covered by this claim — but we can write you a separate estimate for any additional work you'd like to address while we have the vehicle.
Do I need more than one estimate?
Some insurers ask for it. If yours does, we're happy to provide one for free — and we recommend choosing us first.
